"They say in Chester County there are no neutrals there!
You'll either be a Union man or a good for nothin' (opponent inserted here)!"
Thanks, Jared! We agree, and have added three verses to get the ball rolling, so to speak.
Come all you faithful Zolos - good news to you I'll tell
Of how the good old Union has come in here to dwell.
Chorus:
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
My daddy is a Zolo and I'm a Zolo's son
and I'll stick with the Union 'til every battle's done.
Chorus
For New York:
They say in Philadelphia there are no neutrals now
you'll either be a Union fan or a good-for-nuthin' Cow!
For DC:
They say in Philadelphia there are no neutrals, for
you'll either be a Union fan or a fan of Baltimore!
For New England:
They say in Philadelphia there are no neutrals, so
you'll either be a Union fan or a fan of Buffalo!
Chorus
And so on!
(Note: The City of Chester was the namesake and the original county seat of Chester County, but it has been situated in Delaware County since 1789).
I know the Murphy's version is here, and I don't know if this has been picked up yet but I really love the sound of Pete Seeger's version. Not many differences except changing it to "which side are you on boys, which side are you on" but I think that makes it way more singable.
