Songs for the Second Half

Before the long, hot summer of 2011 gets any hotter, we attempt to calm the waters with two reader song suggestions.  First: reader Tim P.  writes with a Roger Torres song. Take it away, Tim!

Before the Sporting KC match I came up with a new Torres chant, to be used when he's subbed in:
---To the tune of "La Cucaracha"

O Roger Torres!
O Roger Torres!
Run around and kick the ball
O Roger Torres!
O Roger Torres!
HEY, He's gonna score a goal! [Cha cha cha]

I've been trying it out with my seatmates, with limited success in Section 134, and we were singing it at the DC tailgate...  If it could make it on the list, I'd be flattered. [He actually wrote this - Eds.]

Next, reader Tim S. suggests borrowing something (no, not more fan brawls) from the Phillies:
I'd like to suggest we sing "High Hopes" by Frank Sinatra. We could use a big song, on the level of "You'll Never Walk Alone" or "Blue Moon", and I think this would fit well. It could work especially well if they played it over the PA system before kickoff and at halftime, as in those two cases. Its message is along the lines of "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", and there's a Philly connection, as the Phillies have been playing it after home games since [long-time, beloved announcer - Eds.] Harry Kalas passed away.

Thanks, Tims!

  1. Phillies fans are very attached to High Hopes.

  2. I don't get why we'd steal High Hopes from the Phillies. It has a history for them, and that's the reason they continue to use it. For us to just take it is cheap as it is totally manufactured. Give it time, something will naturally come up.

  3. Why is it "stealing from Phillies fans?" I'd venture that the overwhelming majority of Union fans are also Phillies fans.

I enjoyed it when the Flyers used "DOOP," and I'd enjoy this as well. Take songs and make them civic, not team-specific.

  4. Sitting in 135, I (unfortunately) haven't been able to hear the Torres song, but keep trying. I like it and we could always use more songs.
